Mental Health Counsellor (Children and Youth)

Reporting to the Health Centre Administrator, the Mental Health Counsellor will provide direct counselling services and support to children and youth including outreach, assessment, treatment, referral, reporting and other related activities.


  • Assessing, treating or referring children and youth who are experiencing or at risk of mental illness
  • Developing, delivering or coordinating preventative activities, including, outreach, education, and other engagement activities for children and youth in need
  • Timely intervention to address crisis and traumatic events as required
  • Liaising and collaborating with other Health Centre staff, T’lisalagi’lakw School, Amlilas (daycare) and Community Services, as well as MCFD, RCMP, public schools and hospitals
  • Accepting referrals for assessment, treatment, reporting and follow-up to assist children and youth in need
  • Providing school-based counselling services to children and youth in need and coordinating and facilitating family or school staff meetings as required
  • Establishing and maintaining a clinical records system appropriate to meet internal and external needs and requirements
  • Consulting with the community to identify needs and recommending programs and services to meet those needs
  • Developing and/or delivering educational information sessions to ‘Namgis staff as required
  • Developing and facilitating community educational and information and outreach sessions and activities
  • Being available for evening and weekend emergency response as may be required from time to time
  • Other related duties as may be required from time to time


  • Masters’ degree in a related field of study is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience providing counselling services to children and youth
  • Experience working directly with Indigenous children and youth, on or off-reserve
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of holistic treatment modalities
  • Current membership in a recognized professional counselling association


  • Satisfactory criminal record check and vulnerable sector search
  • Valid Class 5 drivers licence and personal vehicle
