The revitalization of the historic ‘Na̱mg̱is Nurses’ Residence marks a major step forward in creating a thriving and resilient future for our community. Guided by extensive community input and rooted in the ‘Namgis Comprehensive Community Plan, this project reimagines the IR 2 site in Alert Bay as a vibrant hub for housing, wellness, culture, and economic opportunity.
The concept plan, developed with respect for the land and ‘Na̱mg̱is values, includes:
- Mixed-use housing for Elders, youth, families, and professionals
- A dedicated Youth Centre to foster intergenerational learning and connection
- Flexible revitalization options for the Nurses’ Residence, including retail spaces, artist studios, and live/work units
- New gathering spaces and pathways promoting wellness, recreation, and community life
- Protection of culturally significant areas, including the ‘Na̱mg̱is burial grounds
This project is proposed in phases, starting with the revitalization of the Nurses’ Residence and the construction of the Youth Centre. Together, these efforts reflect our shared commitment to honouring our past while building a sustainable, inclusive future.
