Proposed Amendments to the ʼNa̱mg̱is Land Code

ʼNa̱mg̱is First Nation is moving forward with proposed amendments to the ʼNa̱mg̱is Land Code, which was originally approved by Members in 2019.

This work has been underway for several years and is supported through funding from the First Nations Market Housing Fund. The goal is to create a stronger foundation for future home ownership opportunities in the community and to make our land governance framework more functional and easier to administer.

The project has been carried out in partnership with the First Nations Land Management Resource Centre and Holly Vear Law, with input and direction from the Lands Management Advisory Committee and ʼNa̱mg̱is Lands staff.

The proposed amendments would introduce a new Allotment system for Members and provide greater flexibility around home ownership, financing, renovations, estate planning and other interests in land. The amendments would also refocus Member Approval on significant land decisions while allowing more routine land matters to be managed through Land Laws and policies.

Member Engagement

The first Member engagement session on the proposed ʼNa̱mǥis Land Code amendments was held virtually on September 10, 2026.

The session included presentations from Erica Louie, Land Code Governance Advisor with the First Nations Land Management Resource Centre, and Holly Vear, legal counsel working with ʼNa̱mǥis on the proposed Land Code changes. Topics included the Land Code governance framework, why changes to the current Land Code are being proposed, the proposed allotment system, Member engagement and voting requirements, and next steps.
