Call for Artists & Youth Apprentices – Big House Repainting Project
The ʼNa̱mg̱is First Nation is inviting local Indigenous artists and youth to take part in the repainting of the front of the ʼNa̱mǥis Big House.
This project will bring together experienced artists and youth apprentices to learn and share traditional Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw formline art while restoring this important cultural space.
For Artists
Selected artists will:
- Lead the repainting of the Big House front
- Mentor youth apprentices
- Share traditional techniques and teachings
- Work with the Big House Caretaker and Lands & Infrastructure
- Complete the work before May 30, 2026
All materials, paint, scaffolding, and safety equipment will be provided.
For Youth
Youth participants will:
- Learn traditional painting and design skills
- Work alongside experienced artists
- Gain hands-on mentorship
- Take part in restoring the Big House
No prior experience is required. A willingness to learn and commit to the project is most important.
Timeline
Work will take place in Spring 2026, with painting scheduled during dry weather windows in May. Participants must be available to work flexibly around weather to meet the May 30 deadline.
