Harm Reduction Coordinator
Position Summary: Reporting to the Mental Health Manager, this worker holds a degree in Community Social Services or health related program, such as Human Services, Mental Health, Life Skills & Career Development with two to four (2-4) years’ experience. The incumbent 1) builds community relationships with peers 2) builds healthy relationships with community members facilitating opportunities for Harm Reduction Education, Naloxone training, harm reduction supply distribution and 3) advocates with multiple levels of government, other community agencies, and any service provider that could facilitate individual and structural changes impacting the opioid crisis;
Qualifications & Experience
- Two (2) years’ related experience directly-related experience in the majority of specialties listed in the job description (e.g. working with mental health issues; intake process for addictions; knowledge of the Mental Health Act; understanding the social effects of substance abuse, the ability to organize community groups/programs; the ability to use alternative and traditional healing methods) is required, although an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- In circumstances where there is an equal combination of qualifications and experience, preference will be given to people of Aboriginal heritage.
- Must hold a valid BC Driver’s Licence, valid car insurance and reliable vehicle and have the ability to travel.
- Must be able to provide official copies of academic and certification records.
- Must be able to provide three (3) business references. Valid references are defined as a direct supervisor who is familiar with the applicant’s work.
- Must pass Vulnerable Criminal Records Check.
Unusual Job Features:
- Required to work evenings & weekends, and on occasions when the rest of the Health Centre closes (i.e., Christmas, June Sports, and funerals).
- May be required to respond to medical emergencies – or perceived emergencies – and/or other crisis situations with composure and focus, without assuming responsibility for medical decisions.
- Sensitivity to complex community issues and needs.
