Janitor – Learning Centre

Hours of Work: Shifts start at 4:30pm; scheduled hours vary; plus event based support.

Salary: Level 06; $19.84/hr – $22.91/hr ($36,109 – $41,696 annual), commensurate with experience

About the role

The Janitor is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment throughout the Learning Centre and assigned buildings. This includes daily cleaning of interior spaces, general upkeep of exterior areas, and ensuring the facility is secure and ready for clients, staff, and community members. This role supports the overall health, safety, and comfort of everyone who visits or works within the buildings.

Key responsibilities

Facility Cleaning & Maintenance (Interior)

  • Maintain interior spaces — including floors, washrooms, common areas, offices, and program rooms — to ensure a clean, safe, and welcoming environment.
  • Clean and sanitize washrooms; restock paper towel, soap, and toilet tissue.
  • Clean coffee areas and shared kitchen surfaces; wash cups and replenish supplies.
  • Wipe and clean interior windows, window sills, furniture, desks, tables, and countertops.
  • Dust fixtures, shelving, display cabinets, and office furniture.
  • Sweep, vacuum, and damp mop floors; spot clean walls, doors, and high-touch surfaces.
  • Empty garbage and recycling and ensure proper disposal.
  • Ensure pre and postevent cleaning of interior and exterior spaces.

Facility Cleaning & Maintenance (Exterior)

  • Maintain exterior entrances and walkways to support overall facility cleanliness and safety.
  • Sweep entrances and clean mats as needed.
  • Clean exterior windows on a scheduled basis.

Safety, Security & Reporting

  • Secure the facility after hours, ensuring all doors and windows are locked.
  • Monitor and report maintenance issues, equipment concerns, or safety hazards to the Supervisor.
  • Identify problem areas and recommend solutions or contractor support when appropriate.

Supplies, Equipment & Organization

  • Replenish cleaning and washroom supplies and maintain a basic inventory list.
  • Use and store cleaning equipment safely; report equipment needing repair.
  • Clean fridges and shared appliances as scheduled.

Additional Requirements

  • Reliable, selfmotivated, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Support special events, weekend meetings, or occasional afterhours cleaning as required.
  • Support monthly and quarterly deepcleaning activities as scheduled.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to report issues clearly and promptly.
  • Commitment to respectful and professional conduct.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Previous janitorial or custodial experience in an office, community facility, school, or similar environment (an asset).
  • Knowledge of safe cleaning practices, including proper use of cleaning products, equipment, and disinfectants.
  • WHMIS certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the role, including lifting, bending, standing, and operating cleaning equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment.
