Guardian – Forestry Archaeology

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Forester, the Guardian – Forestry Archaeology is responsible for supporting field activities related to forestry and archaeological surveys throughout ‘Namgis Territory.

This role involves participating in archaeological assessments, forestry field surveys, environmental monitoring, and documenting cultural and natural resources while helping protect and steward the Nation’s lands.

Reports To: Forester

Responsibilities

The successful applicant will:

  • Represent ‘Namgis First Nation professionally while carrying out field duties.
  • Participate in Cultural Heritage Resource (CHR) assessments before forestry harvesting and road construction.
  • Keep accurate records of field activities, plant occurrences, and environmental observations.
  • Assist with forestry surveys including:
    • Cut-block layout
    • Stream assessments
    • Karst surveys
    • Post-harvest assessments
    • Planting checks
    • Silviculture surveys
  • Participate in archaeological assessments, including excavation, screening, equipment transport, and other field work.
  • Represent ‘Namgis during archaeological assessments conducted with outside proponents when required.
  • Help document cultural and natural resources important to ‘Namgis.
  • Assist with office duties as needed.
  • Maintain personal gear and equipment.
  • Safely operate and maintain vessels, ATVs, trucks, trailers, and other equipment.
  • Complete assigned training.
  • Support new and temporary staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Natural Resources Director or Administrator. 

Qualifications & Skills

Applicants should have:

  • The ability to work safely and efficiently.
  • Experience collecting field data using tablets and photographs.
  • The ability to work in remote outdoor environments.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience with map reading, compass use, or similar field navigation.
  • Knowledge of VHF radio communication.
  • Knowledge of ‘Namgis culture. 

Education & Requirements

Applicants should have:

  • RISC Archaeological & CMT Inventory Training (Crew Member level)
  • Grade 12 (or equivalent)
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence
  • Basic First Aid 

Working Conditions

This position includes:

  • Strenuous outdoor labour
  • Work in remote locations
  • Occasional overnight and weekend work
  • Travel by truck, boat, and ferry to worksites throughout ‘Namgis Territory. 

Hours: Monday–Thursday, with occasional Fridays

Salary: Level 13 – $27.83–$32.47/hour (commensurate with experience)
