Gwa’ni Hatchery Worker – Casual & On-Call

Wage: $25.21 – $29.32 per hour
Reports to: Gwa’ni Hatchery Manager

About the Role

‘Na̱mg̱is First Nation is seeking a reliable and hardworking Casual & On-Call Gwa’ni Hatchery Worker.

Under the direction of the Gwa’ni Hatchery Manager, the Hatchery Worker supports fish culture programs and activities, including the capture, enumeration, selection, spawning, incubation, rearing, distribution, release, and marking of salmon.

The position also assists with adult salmon assessments, lake fertilization, data collection, and the preparation and care of equipment used in fish culture activities.

Key Responsibilities

The Gwa’ni Hatchery Worker will:

  • Participate in snorkel assessments of adult sockeye, chinook, and chum salmon.
  • Assist with brood stock collection, sorting, spawning, and egg takes.
  • Participate in egg fertilization and the rearing of juvenile salmon.
  • Assist with data collection and record keeping in the field and on site.
  • Maintain high standards of quality control throughout fish culture activities to support the health and preservation of available stock.
  • Understand and assist with the operation of the pump and water systems on site.
  • Help keep hatchery facilities, the residence, vehicles, and vessels clean, organized, and in operational order.
  • Follow ‘Na̱mg̱is health and safety policies and safe work procedures, including the proper use of equipment.
  • Perform strenuous physical labour, including lifting up to 60 pounds of fish and fish food sacks.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills & Experience

The successful applicant should have:

  • Knowledge of salmon species and their life cycles.
  • Knowledge of how to operate boats, vehicles, and forklifts.
  • Some knowledge of hatcheries and hatchery operations.
  • A reliable and hardworking attitude.
  • A willingness to take direction and assist with a variety of duties.
  • A willingness to continue developing their knowledge of salmon enhancement.

Education & Qualifications

  • Minimum Grade 12 education.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
  • Swiftwater Rescue Training and Occupational First Aid Level 1, or willingness to obtain these certifications.

Working Conditions

Applicants should be aware that this position includes:

  • Daily travel by ferry and truck to the work site.
  • Irregular work hours, which may include overnight and weekend work.
  • Possible emergency call-ins after regular working hours.
