G̱anao (Elissa) Fred-Cranmer has been recognized for her outstanding academic achievements while completing her Practical Nurse training at North Island College. With strong family support, she has earned the Chief Joe Mathias Scholarship and a place on the 2024–2025 Dean’s Honor Roll.

Inspired by her grandmother Ada — a retired Registered Nurse who told her, “There is nothing you can’t do” — G̱anao set her sights on a healthcare career as early as Grade 10. Today, she is well on her way to becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse, with future plans to continue on as a Registered Nurse.

Her learning journey is also featured in the Kwakwa̱ka̱’wakw Health Career Gathering poster series, which highlights Indigenous health professionals and students to inspire the next generation.

This story was submitted by Dr. Laura Cranmer (’Na̱mg̱is/Haida), Professor Emerita, Vancouver Island University, Indigenous/Xwulmuxw Studies, and one of Ganao’s many proud aunties.
