Gwa’ni Hatchery Worker (Casual/On-Call)

Reports To: Hatchery Manager
Salary: $24.18 – $28.13 per hour (Level 11)

Job Overview:
The Hatchery Worker supports salmon enhancement activities at the Gwa’ni Hatchery. This role involves assisting with broodstock collection, spawning, rearing, and release, as well as facility upkeep and safety compliance. Work requires physical labour, irregular hours, and travel to the hatchery site.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with snorkel assessments of adult sockeye, chinook, and chum.
  • Participate in broodstock collection, sorting, spawning, and egg takes.
  • Support egg fertilization, incubation, and rearing of juvenile salmon.
  • Assist with data collection and record keeping in the field and at the hatchery.
  • Maintain high standards of fish health and facility quality control.
  • Understand and support operation of pumps and water systems.
  • Maintain hatchery facilities, residence, vehicles, and vessels in good condition.
  • Follow health and safety policies, use equipment properly, and support team safety practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Carry out strenuous physical labour, including lifting up to 60 pounds of fish and feed sacks.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Grade 12 education (minimum).
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Knowledge of salmon species and life cycles.
  • Familiarity with hatchery operations, boats, vehicles, and forklifts.
  • Reliable, hardworking, and able to follow instructions.
  • Willingness to expand knowledge in salmon enhancement.
  • Ability to obtain Swiftwater Rescue and Occupational First Aid Level 1 (if not already certified).

Other Job Features:

  • Daily travel by ferry and truck to the hatchery site.
  • Irregular hours, including overnight shifts and weekends.
  • May be called for emergency work after hours.
