Mental Health Counsellor

Job Summary: We are seeking a Mental Health Counsellor to join our health and wellness team at the ‘Namgis First Nation Health Centre. Reporting to the Health Centre Administrator, the Mental Health Counsellor provides mental health counselling services to all age groups including children, youth, adults, and Elders.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Providing direct counselling to ‘Namgis First Nation community members including assessment, treatment, referral and follow-up, working primarily with individuals, families or groups
  • Providing counselling that is often related to crisis, trauma, suicide, domestic violence, sexual, physical, or emotional abuse
  • Providing timely and solution-oriented assessment and intervention services to address crisis situations and traumatic events using the case management model, and mobilizes and utilizes resources within the community as appropriate
  • Responding to mental health disorders and situations using a range of acceptable treatment approaches
  • Liaison with and accepts referrals from other ‘Namgis Health Centre staff, MCFD, RCMP, hospitals, schools and related agencies to provide assessment, treatment, follow-up, referral, education or other mental health services to individuals, families, or groups
  • Coordinating and facilitating weekly family support meetings
  • Maintaining clinical records/reports that conform to established and required

legislation, policies, procedures and professional and ethical standards

  • Developing and providing relevant internal education/information sessions to ‘Namgis staff as required
  • Developing and/or facilitating education/workshop/information sessions for community members on relevant and current mental health issues
  • Outreach and consultation with the community to identify needs and recommending appropriate programs and services

Job Qualifications:

  • Masters’ degree in a related field of study is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience providing direct counselling services to individuals, families and groups
  • Experience working with Indigenous clientele on or off reserve
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of holistic treatment modalities
  • Current membership in a recognized professional counselling association

Other Job Requirements

  • Responding to after-hours emergencies as required
  • Overtime, evening and weekends as may be required from time to time
  • Satisfactory criminal record check and vulnerable sector search
  • Valid drivers’ license and personal vehicle for work purposes

Salary: $66,048-$77,532
