Aquatic Guardian Operations Planner – 2026
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Aquatic Guardian Operations Planner is responsible for the planning, scheduling, organizing field gear and ensuring the proper data is collected and entered digitally for the Aquatic Guardian activities. This position provides daytoday support to ensure the aquatic activities are completed smoothly and efficiently. This is a seasonal position that is subject to changing length depending on funding.
REPORTS TO: Aquatic Resources Manager, Natural Resources Department
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Works closely with the Aquatic Guardian Supervisors, Gwa’ni Hatchery Manager and the Aquatic Resources Manager to ensure proper coverage for field and hatchery operations
- Scheduling Aquatic field and hatchery activities
- Packing scientific equipment, field gear, safety equipment, transport vehicle and vessel keys for field shifts
- Assist in the development of annual, seasonal, monthly, and weekly aquatic operations plans
- Ensure program deliverables, timelines, and reporting requirements are met
- Participate in program reviews and adaptive management discussions
- Tracking and maintaining a variety of equipment, including land- and marine-based transport vehicles and vessels and scientific monitoring equipment
- Storing data on hard-drive devices and online software platforms
- Support funding, reporting, and accountability requirements
- Assist with inventory tracking and identify equipment or supply needs
- Support maintenance planning and coordination for program assets
- Positively represent ‘Namgis in the community and to external partners, agencies, and the public
- Participate in:
- Community relations and education initiatives
- ‘Na̱mg̱is food security activities
- Meetings, workshops, and outreach events as assigned
- Perform other related duties as required to support aquatic resource objectives
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Proven proficiency using software applications including Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Excel, Word, and Sharepoint
- Willingness to learn software such as Google Earth, Avenza, Sling, Adobe Acrobat, etc.
- Flexibility with work schedule is essential, including acting as a safety-check in contact at various times, such as early mornings, evenings, and weekends
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Highly organized
- Experience in aquatic resources, fisheries, or a related environmental field would be an asset
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Knowledge of Kwakwa̱ka̱’wakw culture and ‘Na̱mg̱is protocols is a strong asset
EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS
- Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent (postsecondary training preferred)
- Fisheries, natural resources, or stewardship training programs are assets
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License
UNUSUAL JOB FEATURES
- This is predominantly an office based position (either in Alert Bay or at the Gwa’ni Hatchery), but may have some field or hatchery activities
- Irregular work hours including early mornings, evenings, nights and weekends
